When I was elected to the Gastonia City Council in November of 2015, I did not realize how quickly time would pass. Here we are in 2017 and because of City Council efforts to stagger the 4 year terms, I am part of the group of Council members who had a two year term instead of four. It seems hard to believe that this year the Ward 1 seat will be up for election again.
After careful consideration I have concluded that two years is not enough time to get done what needs to get done. I am proud of what has been accomplished in just 14 months and proud of the work I have accomplished as a council member and the work we have accomplished as a City Council.
This is why I hereby announce that I am in it to win it in 2017. Yes, I am seeking another term to finish what we started. Gastonia is a great place to live and work. It has so much potential and promise, but it is the people that make it stand out.
One of the greatest honors of my short career in public service has been getting to know the residents of this City. Whether it was a Town Hall meeting, a forum on the opiate crisis, meeting with small business owners or our young people or assisting someone individually with a concern…The greatest personal or professional success has been the relationships that have been built and the trust that has been earned.
Gastonia is emerging from one of its darkest times economically. We are starting to see our tax base grow again and people are building and moving where a few years ago the wheels of progress had almost come to a halt. I am hopeful that the FUSE project, the growth of Loray Mill, the renewed interest in downtown, planned development in the Highland Community, the explosion of new retail on the east and south ends, infrastructure projects and a renewed pride in our City will take us even further than we have imagined. And I want to be there right beside you.
My promise to you is simple. I will continue to bring City Hall to you. Residents should not have to seek out their representitives…Your representitives should seek out you. This past year I have held 2 forums, 3 round table discussions, 1 town hall and hosted numerous small coffee talk events where the agenda was you and what was on your mind. I have also pitched the idea for a City Hall open House, which is in the works for this coming year. That is Democracy and it should be YOU focused not I focused.
Today I ask you to consider giving me the honor to serve you for another term. There is a lot of work ahead and together I am positive we can do it. Life is unpredictable and sometimes throws a curve ball, but public service and respect should never falter. I may not always get it right, nobody will…But I will always listen and always make decisions after careful deliberation.
I hope you will join me in the coming months as I continue serving you as a City Council member and campaign for reelection. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any idea, concerns or questions. This is your City and I am here for you.
Thank you and let’s move forward, because Gastonia is stronger when we are together.
